MuMo

MuMo is the fusion of music and movement developed by two accomplished, approachable and fun artists, Francesco Senese (violin) and Tony Lopresti (mime).

The foundation for their collaboration began in 2009 during the workshops of the Festival Musica sull’Acqua on the shores of Lake Como in Italy where they developed together numerous performances in which music and movement merge together into a single artistic language.

Francesco’s and Tony’s intuition that physical movement and gesture live inherently in a music score, and in the sounds produced from it, compelled them to probe more deeply into uncharted musical territory using mime, the language of silence.

Silence is fundamental to music. From silence sound is born, which expands to fill space like the actions and gestures of the human body.  

Francesco and Tony also share a deep spiritual connection that animates their lives and work. The art forms of violin and mime are an expression of their essences and their connection gave rise to MuMo. 

Tony and Francesco understand each other not because Tony understands music, or Francesco understands mime, but because they understand each other’s foundations.

Tony Lopresti

Tony is an international storyteller – acting (with words or without) and writing (with words or “without”). When developing a mime production or a physical theatre piece, Tony has said that he writes not with pen and paper but with the bodies of others. And with his own.

Since 2009 he has reprised on the shores of Lake Como in Italy the mime and physical theatre venturess he began with Moni and Mina Yakim at the New York Pantomime Theatre. He is the Mime Director for the Festival Musica sull’Acqua (Festival of Music on the Water) where he has conceived, directed and choreographed full-length classical mime productions – with up to 30 performers – to accompany Festival orchestras. 

His collaboration with Festival Artistic Director, violinist Francesco Senese, has led to the founding of MuMoMusement, a new artistic language fusing classical music and classical movement into an exciting and modern expression that crosses all language and culture barriers. Those include Apocalypse Man, Tony’s original silent theatre production which he performs with Francesco playing Belá Bartók’s Sonata for Solo Violin.

Tony has appeared at Carnegie Hall and at Lincoln Center with the New York Pantomime Theatre and toured abroad. 

Using words, he was a member of the Alliance Repertory Theatre in Los Angeles and has worked there and in New York as a writer, producer and actor in mainstream and experimental theatre and in television, film and commercials.

Tony’s storytelling skills served him well as Director of Video Production for the New York City Police Department (NYPD) where he produced training, motivational and informational videos and consulted with other police and government agencies to modernize video communications. He produced about 3,500 videos in public service. He was also on the Board of Directors of ITVA (International Television Association).

Using lots of words, Tony was Program Director and Operations Manager for WEVD-AM-FM in New York City – The Station that Speaks Your Language – producing and overseeing programs in 17 languages. He also created community outreach and treatment videos for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Hygiene in Boston and also worked there with special needs children.

Francesco Senese

Francesco Senese is a member of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and Assistant Concertmaster of the Orchestra Mozart of Bologna, initially at the invitation of Claudio Abbado. He has played under the direction of Diego Matheuz with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra and as a soloist with various orchestras including the Human Rights Orchestra, under the direction of Alessio Allegrini, the Cameristi della Scala and with the Orquestra Filarmonica of Bolivia . He has performed as a soloist with Orchestra Mozart with musicians like Isabelle Faust, Raphael Christ, Danusha Waskiewicz and Alois Posh. He is one of the founding members and first violin of the Kaleido Ensemble and is the first violin and founding member of the Quartet Matamoe which had its debut at the Stradivari Festival in Cremona in 2014. 

Under the Amadeus label, Francesco and pianist Andre Gallo released a recording of the complete works for violin and piano of Gabriel Fauré. He will present Beethoven’s sonatas for violin and piano with Ingrid Fliter in concert for the Society Amici della Musicain Ancona.

His passion for teaching led him from a young age to teach at the Experimental Music School "R. Goitre" in Colico, his birthplace on the shores of Lake Como in Italy, where he began his musical studies. As a sign of deep gratitude for the musical education he received, in 2005, the twentieth anniversary of the foundation of the School, he founded and remains Artistic Director of The Festival Musica sull’Acqua, a chamber music festival that has become a reference point for international artists, young people and children in the Lake Como region. He now also holds the position of Professor of Violin at the Instituto Musicale Vincenzo Bellini in Catania, Sicily.

He taught at the invitation of Claudio Abbado and Diego Matheuz for the Orchestra System for Youth and Children of Venezuela founded by José Antonio Abreu, where he gave master classes for young musicians in Caracas and Barquisimeto.

He has collaborated with Tony Lopresti, a mime actor from the United States, since 2009 developing what Francesco calls a new artistic language merging music and movement into a complete, inseparable whole. Together they founded MuMoMusement and have presented their productions internationally.

MuMo

MuMo è la fusione di musica e movimento sviluppata da due artisti affermati, particolarmente versatili, Francesco Senese (violino) e Tony Lopresti (mimo).

Le basi della loro collaborazione sono iniziate nel 2009 durante i workshop del Festival Musica sull'Acqua  sulle rive del Lago di Como in Italia, dove hanno sviluppato insieme numerose esibizioni in cui musica e movimento si fondono in un unico linguaggio artistico.

L'intuizione di Francesco e Tony che il movimento fisico e il gesto vivono intrinsecamente in una partitura musicale, e nei suoni prodotti da esso, li hanno spinti a sondare più profondamente in un territorio musicale inesplorato usando la mimica, il linguaggio del silenzio.

Il silenzio è fondamentale per la musica. Dal silenzio nasce il suono, che si espande per riempire lo spazio come le azioni e i gesti del corpo umano.  

Francesco e Tony condividono anche una profonda connessione spirituale che anima le loro vite e il loro lavoro. Le forme d'arte del violino e del mimo sono un'espressione delle loro essenze e la loro connessione ha dato origine a MuMo. 

Tony Lopresti

Tony è un narratore internazionale in quanto il suo racconto e la sua “scrittura” non avvengono con le parole ma attraverso il gesto e il movimento. Quando sviluppa una produzione mimica o un pezzo di “teatro fisico”, infatti Tony afferma che non scrive con la penna e la carta ma con il corpo degli altri e il suo.

Dal 2009 ha ripreso sulle rive del Lago di Como in Italia l’esperienza di mimo e teatro fisico che ha iniziato con Moni e Mina Yakim al New York Pantomime Theatre. È il Mimo Director del Festival Musica sull'Acqua dove ha ideato, diretto e coreografato produzioni di mimi classici a tutto tondo, con un massimo di 30 interpreti, per accompagnare le orchestre del Festival. 

La sua collaborazione con il direttore artistico del Festival, il violinista Francesco Senese, ha portato alla fondazione di MuMoMusement, un nuovo linguaggio artistico che fonde la musica classica e il gesto mimico classico in un'espressione eccitante e moderna che attraversa tutte le barriere linguistiche e culturali. La prima produzione che si sviluppa in tal senso è Apocalypse Man , originale pezzo teatrale muto di Tony che si esibisce con Francesco sulla Sonata per violino solo di Belá Bartók .

Tony si è esibito alla Carnegie Hall e al Lincoln Center con il New York Pantomime Theatre e anche  in tournée all'estero. 

E’ stato membro dell'Alliance Repertory Theatre di Los Angeles e ha lavorato lì e a New York come scrittore, produttore e attore nel teatro mainstream e sperimentale, in televisione, film e pubblicità.

Le doti narrative di Tony gli hanno permesso di diventare direttore della produzione video per il dipartimento di polizia di New York (NYPD), dove ha realizzato video di formazione, motivazionali e informativi e consultato da altre agenzie di polizia e governative per modernizzare le comunicazioni video. Ha prodotto circa 3.500 video in servizio pubblico. È stato anche membro del Consiglio di Amministrazione di ITVA (International Television Association).

Tony è stato direttore del programma e responsabile delle operazioni per WEVD-AM-FM a New York –“ la stazione che parla la tua lingua” - producendo e supervisionando programmi in 17 lingue. Ha anche creato video di sensibilizzazione della comunità e di trattamenti curativi per il Dipartimento di Igiene Mentale del Massachusetts a Boston lavorato anche lì con bambini con bisogni speciali.

Francesco Senese

Francesco Senese è membro della Lucerne Festival Orchestra e Assistant Concertmaster dell’Orchestra Mozart di Bologna su invito di Claudio Abbado. Con l’etichetta Amadeus, Francesco con il pianista Andre Gallo ha realizzato una registrazione dell’opera omnia di Gabriel Fauré per violino e pianoforte. Per la Società Amici della Musica di Ancona presenterà le sonate di Beethoven per violino e pianoforte con Ingrid Fliter. 

La sua passione per l’insegnamento lo ha portato fin da giovanissimo a insegnare presso la Scuola Sperimentale di Musica “R.Goitre” di Colico, sulle rive del Lago di Como in Italia, suo paese natale e dove ha iniziato i suoi studi musicali.

In segno di profonda riconoscenza per l’istruzione musicale ricevuta, nel 2005, ventesimo anniversario della fondazione della Scuola, ha fondato ed è tuttora Direttore Artistico del Festival Musica sull’Acqua, un festival di musica da camera che è diventato un punto di riferimento per artisti internazionali, bambini e giovani della regione del Lago di Como. Èdocente di violino presso l’Istituto Musicale “V. Bellini” di Catania, in Sicilia. 

Ha insegnato, su invito di Claudio Abbado e Diego Matheuz, per il Sistema delle Orchestre Giovanili e Infantili del Venezuela fondato dal Maestro José Antonio Abreu, tenendo masterclass per i giovani musicisti di Caracas e Barquisimeto. 

Dal 2009 collabora con Tony Lopresti, mimo newyorkese, sviluppando quello che Francesco definisce un nuovo linguaggio artistico che unisce la musica e il movimento in un’unità completa e inseparabile. Insieme hanno fondato MuMoMusement e hanno presentato le loro produzioni a livello internazionale.
